Timing & triggers DICEE: Declarations

The date and time a policy's coverage officially begins.

The inception date is the moment your coverage starts under a policy, the beginning of the policy period. Nothing that happens before this date and time is covered (subject to any separate retroactive date on claims-made policies). It is often used interchangeably with the effective date, and it appears on your declarations page alongside the expiration date. For founders racing to satisfy a vendor or investor deadline, the inception date is what a certificate of insurance proves coverage is actually in force from.

Why it matters for your business

  • Losses before the inception date are not covered, so timing your start date around a contract deadline matters.
  • Vendors and landlords check that the inception date is on or before the day work begins.
  • On claims-made policies, the inception date and the retroactive date together define what is covered.

People also ask

What does inception date mean in insurance?

The inception date is the date (and often the time) your policy's coverage begins. It marks the start of the policy period, and any covered event has to occur on or after this date. It usually matches the effective date shown on your declarations page.

Is the inception date the same as the effective date?

In most policies, yes, the two terms are used interchangeably to mean the day coverage starts. If a document lists both and they differ, ask your broker which one governs when coverage is actually in force.
